In Nigeria, many autistic individuals are underestimated simply because they do not fit traditional expectations. But difference is not deficiency.
Shifting the Way We See Ability
When an autistic child learns differently, it does not mean they cannot learn. It means the teaching method may need to change.
Some autistic individuals:
- Communicate through pictures, typing, or AAC devices
- Develop deep expertise in specific interests
- Solve problems in unique and creative ways
- Notice patterns others miss
These are strengths worth recognising and supporting.
The Danger of Narrow Expectations
Society often defines intelligence too narrowly. Children who do not communicate or socialise in expected ways are frequently overlooked.
This can lead to:
- Low expectations
- Reduced opportunities
- Loss of confidence and self worth
What Real Support Looks Like
Real support means:
- Respecting different communication methods
- Encouraging strengths and interests
- Adapting environments instead of forcing conformity
- Focusing on growth, not comparison
Why This Matters
When autistic individuals are valued for who they are, they are more likely to thrive with confidence and dignity.
