Dear Starters: Supporting Non-Speaking Autistic Children in Nigeria
At Bethelxafe Autism Foundation, we emphasize that communication goes far beyond speech. Many autistic children in Nigeria may not use spoken words, but that does not mean they are silent. They communicate through gestures, facial expressions, body movements, and assistive tools that deserve understanding and respect.
Unfortunately, in many parts of Nigeria, limited awareness still leads to misconceptions—some may think a non-speaking child “does not understand” or “cannot learn.” This is far from true. Every child communicates; we simply need to learn their language.
Understanding Non-Speaking Communication
A non-speaking child may express themselves through:
- Eye gaze or pointing to indicate preferences.
- Gestures or signs for basic needs.
- Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) to make requests.
- Assistive communication apps or boards for more complex thoughts.
These tools can open new worlds for children and families, helping them express feelings, ask questions, and participate more fully in daily life.
Building Communication at Home
You don’t need expensive equipment to start. Here are simple ways to encourage interaction:
- Use visuals: Print or draw pictures for food, play, rest, and daily tasks.
- Model communication: Point to or show the card as you speak the word.
- Celebrate effort: Respond with enthusiasm even if your child’s communication seems small.
- Stay patient: Wait for their response. Silence can be part of the process.
Every attempt at communication deserves acknowledgment. Over time, these moments build confidence and mutual understanding.
Community Awareness and Inclusion
In schools and community spaces, teachers and caregivers can promote inclusion by:
- Allowing extra time for responses.
- Using gestures or visuals during lessons.
- Encouraging peers to interact kindly and patiently.
When communities accept non-speaking communication as valid, children thrive with less frustration and greater social connection.
