Dear caregiver, Supporting Siblings of Autistic Children
Autism affects the whole family, not only the child with the diagnosis. Siblings often face confusion, jealousy, or even stigma from peers. Bethelxafe Autism Foundation helps Nigerian families understand how to support siblings with love and balance.
Common challenges siblings face
- Feeling neglected when parents focus on the autistic child.
- Embarrassment in public when peers do not understand autism.
- Anxiety or guilt about their role in the family.
Helping siblings understand autism
Use simple language:
“Your brother’s brain works differently. He needs extra help, but he also has special gifts.”
Reading children’s books about autism can also build empathy and understanding.
Creating one-on-one time
Spend even 15 minutes daily with the sibling doing something special. This small investment builds strong bonds.
Encouraging responsibility without pressure
Siblings should not carry the burden of parenting. Instead, encourage small roles like reading a book together or playing a game. Praise them for their support without expecting them to solve challenges.
Community connection
Encourage siblings to join safe peer groups where autism is understood. This reduces isolation and builds confidence.
