Preventing Meltdowns in Autistic Children Through Sensory Management

Preventing meltdowns often means proactively managing sensory input. Keep a diary of aggressive episodes: note time of day, environment (light, sound), activities, and your child’s mood. Look for patterns maybe afternoons in the bright living room trigger more outbursts. Adjust accordingly: lower blinds, add soft lamps, or play gentle background music. Introduce sensory breaks every 30–45 minutes: a two-minute hand-under-water activity, a brief walk outside, or gentle joint compressions. Announce each break: “It’s time for your senses break, let’s hop on the trampoline twice.” These pauses reset their nervous system, reducing built-up frustration that can lead to aggression.
