When your child’s frustration peaks

When your child’s frustration peaks, your calm presence matters most. First, remove any immediate dangers, move sharp or heavy objects out of reach. Lower your voice and slow your movements to signal safety. Offer them their known “calm corner” toolkit: noise-blocking headphones, a weighted lap pad, or a favorite fidget. Gently guide them by the elbow or shoulder (if they allow) toward that space without shouting instructions. Sit quietly beside them and breathe together modeling deep, measured inhales and exhales. Resist the urge to lecture or scold; instead, narrate your care: “I’m here. You’re safe.” Once they’ve settled, praise the small step of using their tools, then discuss what triggered them and how to notice that the storm is coming next time.
