At Bethelxafe Autism Foundation, we encourage parents to look beyond behaviour that appears calm. A quiet child is not always a comfortable child.
Some autistic children learn to suppress their needs because expressing them has not been understood or supported.
Understanding Masking
Masking happens when a child:
- Hides discomfort
- Suppresses natural behaviours
- Tries to imitate others to fit in
This can look like calmness on the outside but exhaustion on the inside.
What Parents Should Watch For
Instead of only looking for obvious distress, notice:
- Withdrawal or sudden quietness
- Reduced engagement
- Tension in body language
- Emotional collapse after structured settings
Why This Matters
A child who appears “easy” may be carrying more internal stress than one who expresses it openly.
Creating Safe Expression
- Encourage honest communication
- Avoid punishing expression of discomfort
- Check in regularly, even when things seem fine
